I seem surrounded by Phds. A number of times now we have found ourselves in conversation with academics. Pairs of female academics in fact. Retired female academics. Today we were sitting at the Glenfiddich coffee shop and at the next table were the latest retired female academics. Being loud Australians they overheard my latest theory and laughed out loud. They actually ridiculed my theory all across the coffee area, at first. Soon they came to understand my thoughts. Eventually the history professor - professor of Scottish History I believe, turned to her Physicist colleague with,
“He may actually have something there, I will need to think about this!”
“He may actually have something there, I will need to think about this!”
My simple statement that kept us all entertained for 20 minutes of academic mish mash was,
“I think Harry Potter is just a reinterpretation of the Jacobite rebellion.”
Now it is an easy thing to consider when you arrive at Glenfiddich. Here you find the Bonnie Prince Charlie monument and the Harry Potter train all in one photo frame - well almost - if you position yourself right.
The Harry Potter train runs from Fort William through this wild Scottish highland out to Mallaig. This is the real train used in the movie. The scene with the flying Ford Anglia occurs right in this glen. The viaduct they fly over is real. It is here at Glenfiddich. So as I climbed the hill I built the theory that Harry is actually the story of the Jacobites.
As my new academic friend eventually explained for the benefit of her physics colleague. Dr Physicist suggested she could have nothing to do with the discussion, it being outside her discipline. We asked her to explain how a steam train works instead and she was happily back on track. Dr History (Scots) went on to build my theory.
They both have a popular young hero: Charlie and Harry.
An evil oppressor, he who shall not be named and the Brits
An epic struggle.
There are a few problems. If it were totally a recreation Harry has to lose like Charlie at Culloden.
Perhaps therefore we are looking at it from a Scottish point of view. Maybe Harry is the British and Charlie is Volde… who shall not be named.
It has merit I am sure. Between us, Dr History (Scot) and me, I am sure we can nail it into place. Just a shame that Harry has to go live in France at the end. Or worse still, Harry turns out to be British they are the good guys.
I am sure I can make it work. Why else would Harry passenge in the car with Ron right down Glenfiddich. I am sure they know more than they are telling. Didn’t J K Rowling have editorial rights to the film.
Anyway, keep this a secret. Don’t share it with anyone. I believe I can convince Dr. History (Scot) to return from retirement to supervise me in my Phd.
Harry Potter explains the truth behind the Jacobite rebellion.
Or maybe it was Star Wars, or High Noon.
