We met the 0900 train from Runcorn to Lime Street station. It trundled along the tracks delivering us for a wonderful day wandering about this harbour town. On the train we saw a sight that took us by surprise. Travelling with us was a young girl who seemed to have forgotten to remove her curlers for the morning commute.
As we arrived into Lime Street and began our wander about the streets we noticed more and more young girls wandering the streets with the same massive rollers in their hair. Some elected to cover their developing hair assembly with a head scarf. Many just left it exposed to the elements and to the observance of a couple of aussie travellers.
These girls seem to be joined by mates all across the town. Gangs of girls, dragging suitcases on wheels dressed in sashes and custom tee shirts. Then we noticed that these are girls on Hen parties. I really did not think FA Cup weekend would make a good time to plan a wedding. However, it seems that about 30 weddings are happening in this town this weekend.
The link came together for us in one of the Beatles exhibition. There was a discussion of lunch time performances in the Cavern Club. It made references to the girls coming to see the Beatles in their lunch hour. It talked about them heading in to work on Friday morning, slipping out at lunch time and dropping back to work for the afternoon all with a head scarf covering their curlers so their hair would be perfect for the night out as they headed back to the Cavern club to see their heroes again.
It seems that travelling around Liverpool with curlers in your hair has been going on for 60 years or more.
