I am flying to UK with Emirates in 2015 after using them to get to Geneva last year. I actually believe that Emirates in and out of Adelaide has been wonderful for our connectivity to Europe and the world. I know of people who have used Emirates from Adelaide to New York, Boston, Rio and Nairobi as well as the logical European trips to Paris, Stockholm, Zurich, Madrid or London.
Connections in Dubai are easy, remarkably easy actually. In 2014 my 777 had to park remotely and the passengers were bussed to the terminal, a 20 minute trip. This time we were deposited at the terminal. My 1 hour 50 minute connection was made with time to spare. Yes, DXB is huge and growing but it is clearly marked and not a problem to negotiate. I can comfortable suggest it is a good option for us in Adelaide.
Emirates airline services Adelaide with a Boeing 777 300ER. It is a big plane with nearly 400 seats. Logically, when I arrived at ADL I asked about upgrades to better seats. I learned an interesting fact. No, I could not get better seats. No one ever gets better seats out of ADL, the plane is always full. The Emirates person and I joked about the need for ADL to be upguaged to an A380. We are the only Australian city that does not receive an A380. Perhaps it is time.
Then again getting 500 Adelaidians onto the plane with only one airbridge may be a challenge. Perhaps we have to wait till the Airport gets a few more gates. If you have not seen the upgrade plans for ADL it is worth a look. There is a magical flyover to see what they are considering. Then we will fit an A380.
From DXB to MAN I got my first trip on an A380 and I had high expectations - not high enough. It was wonderful. Now I have even more reasons why I want an A380 into Adelaide. I admit I did not expect it to be so much better than the 777. But it was. It did feel wonderfully more spacious and so much quieter.
I am not sure I am prepared to fly off to BNE, SYD, MEL or even PER just to get on an A380. But after my 8 hours to Manchester (MAN) on an A380 I am less - not so sure.
