Black Friday

Black Friday comes from the album Katy Lied which was was released in 1975. The song tells the story of September 24 1869. It was a Friday when some Gold investors tried to corner the market and make a big profit. The Government released a lot of Gold and foiled their plan. They all lost lots.
The most interesting part of the song to Australians is the reference to the town of Musswellbrook. It is of course mispronounced in the song being pronounced as it looks. There are so many stories as to why it appears in the song. The story I heard and I like is that it was a town about as far away from Wall Street as you can get without head. It is a suggestion that the investors are getting as far as possible to hide.

This is a basic 12 bar blues with a Steely Dan twist. They are known for their complex harmonies and they sure use complexity in this song layering many chords on top of each other.  Verses 2 and 3 are especially complex in the second part when there is a D chord dropped onto of a G with an E in the base. What a rich sound it is. It is a tough song to make work without many players but it if great fun to play.

It is a new song to our repertoire and one that we have not performed often. I want to get it right before it becomes a regular in the set. It will happen but is going to take a while.

I want to talk about the songs I play and sing. I love the stories I have collected about these songs over the years and I want to share the stories with anyone interested. And I want to talk about how I like to perform them. I hope there is some interest here.
